LIHP administering $56M in rental help for two Nassau towns

Two Nassau County towns are partnering with the Long Island Housing Partnership to provide economic assistance to tenants and landlords facing difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The town of Hempstead received approximately $40 million and the town of Oyster Bay received $16 million in federal funds to help tenants pay rent and utilities. Programs in both cities are managed by LIHP.

This program is designed to assist residents with current and future rent, utilities and other housing-related expenses, such as arrears on home energy costs, and rental deposits. Both tenants and landlords can apply and both are asked to participate.

Assistance may be provided for up to 18 months and will cover delinquency and expenses incurred on or after March 13, 2020. allGrants are provided on a first-come, first-served basis until federal funds are exhausted, with priority given to very low-income households and those who have been unemployed for more than 90 days.

Applicants must show that at least one individual in the household is eligible for unemployment benefits, has experienced a decrease in household income, has incurred significant expenses, or has suffered other financial hardship during or as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. You must also prove that the household is homeless or at risk of housing insecurity, and your household’s income must be at least 80% of the HUD regional median income in 2020 or currently projected 2022 income. Income standards depend on the size of the household.

Residents of the town of Oyster Bay may submit applications by September 16, and residents of the town of Hempstead may submit applications by August 26.
