Smithfield Birmingham public consultation to launch

Public talks have begun for the £1.9 billion Smithfield Birmingham project.

Developers are starting to plan to investigate both online and in three face-to-face sessions over the next few weeks.

Focusing on the former wholesale market site near Bullring, the entire project will eventually have 3,000 new homes, the base of the historic Bull Ring market, leisure and cultural spaces, a festival square and a landscape park.

A proposal for the 42-acre Smithfield project is being prepared by a partner designated by the Birmingham City Council for the Lendlease initiative.

The opening of public consultations follows news last month that Birmingham has appointed a multi-institutional design team for its first phase of work, which includes implementing Intervention Architecture and Minesh Patel Architects.

The drop-in session is as follows:

Saturday, March 26th 10am – 4pm

St. Martin’s Church, Edgbaston Street

Tuesday, March 29th 1pm – 7pm

St. Martin’s Church, Edgbaston Street

Monday, April 4th 3pm – 8pm

Birmingham Stadium, Hearst Street

Birmingham City Council Leader Cllr Ian Ward said: “Smithfield Birmingham is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a new community in the heart of our city and we are excited to partner with the internationally proven Lendlease Europe. We have a track record of promoting such major developments.

“This £1.9 billion development means jobs, homes and opportunities for people across the city and Smithfield Birmingham will be a shining example of inclusive economic growth that will leave a real legacy in the heart of Birmingham.

“We hope this initiative will also celebrate our legacy and that the historic Bull Ring Markets will be central to this development.”

James Amos, Director of Development at Lendlease, added: “With the city’s rich trading history and exciting future as an international destination, we are committed to enabling Smithfield to be built and shaped by the hands of diverse local people throughout Birmingham’s community.

“The first step in this consultation is to listen to people and gather as many thoughts and ideas as possible to help develop a proposal.

“We’d love to hear from people on how best to preserve the history and heritage of the iconic marketplace in the new design.”
